Preparing for your vacation!

PACK LIKE A PRO

Packing a bag takes skill. And to many, it can be a work of art. Utilizing space and being spot-on about what items to include can take years to perfect. Below are a few tricks of the trade to help you become a Master Packer.

Consider the weather and what kinds of activities you’ll be doing. Visit weather-related sites to check out how the weather will be at your destination. Ski trip? Pack thermal underwear, wool socks, ski clothes and ski goggles. Beach-bound? Pack a swimsuit, sandals, hat and sunglasses.

Buy travel-size containers for your toiletries. You can always drop into a local shop to restock if you run out. Seal up containers in airtight plastic bags to prevent contents from leaking into your suitcase.

Coordinate your wardrobe with pieces that mix and match. Choose 2-3 color schemes (neutrals are always a safe bet) so each item can work with more than one outfit. Dress in layers so you can adapt to changing temperature.

Pack clothing using the "roll" technique. Lay two or three items on top of one another, smooth out and then roll them up like you would a sleeping bag. This saves space and helps prevent wrinkles. Always zip zippers and button buttons.

BEFORE YOU GO CHECKLIST

  • Log on to USPS.com to stop your mail delivery.

  • Notify your bank/credit card company if you plan to use your card while traveling.

  • Check to ensure your passport is not expired or nearing expiration. We recommend applying for or renewing your passport well ahead of planned international travel as it is a common requirement to have a valid of passport of at least six months beyond period of intended stay in many countries.

  • Photocopy your passport and/or driver's license for safekeeping.

  • Set plug-in timers in your home so it looks like you're home – even when you're not.

  • Consider downloading the Mobile Passport app for international travel from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It will expedite your entry into the U.S.

Luggage information:

  • Review your airlines baggage policies for checked and carry-on bags

  • Carry on info: We know, you’ve probably heard it before, but just in case you need a reminder: you’re only allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item onboard at no charge. Just make sure they fit into the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

  • Carry on medications and jewelry to avoid lost or stolen items.
